Do children also have 'tension'?

It doesn't matter that the English word 'tension' is one of the most used words by Nepalese people in their daily life. Its Nepali word is tension. But everyone from educated to illiterate is saying - I have tension.

Teenagers who are busy with their studies, young people who are running for career, adults who are taking care of the household, old people who are suffering from chronic diseases are heard saying 'Tension Bho' every time.

In a way, this word has become similar to Thego in children. Even children seem to be saying tension these days. Do children also have tension?

Psychologist Vinod Poudel says that tension can affect young people, senior citizens and children of all ages. Many parents may wonder what is the tension in the child. But children also have different tensions according to their age," he says.

According to a study in the UK, one in four children up to the age of 14 hurt themselves due to stress. The Children's Society has found that 76,000 girls and 33,000 boys of this age have injured themselves in one way or another in a year.

Children sometimes, instead of asking what kind of tension did I have, the parents tell you what tension at such a young age. Paudel says that this will add more tension to the child.

"From the time children go to school, they start getting tension. A child who is growing up with his parents at home gets stressed when he has to leave his parents and go to school,' says Paudel, 'When he starts going to school, the child gets stressed by teachers, friends and studies.'

After getting older and entering adolescence, even if the physical and mental development of his friends along with him is faster than his own, the child experiences tension. Paudel says that children experience stress at various levels as they age.

There are mainly two types of stress in children.

positive tension

Positive tension in children is called 'U stress'. Paudel says that the exam is a positive tension for the child. Exams give tension to the child, but to get rid of that tension, he takes the help of parents, teachers and friends. He spares a lot of time to study,'' he says, 'because of which he gets good results in the exam. Positive tension increases performance.

negative tension

The child also has negative tension, which is called 'distress'. Poudel says that if the child is worried about the exam, that worry will cause him tension, but if he can't manage that tension, it will turn into negative tension.

Others may have read it, but I have not read it. If I get stressed because I don't feel like writing anything, the negative tension starts to affect me physically and mentally," says Paudel. Due to negative tension, symptoms like lack of sleep, lack of interest in food, and difficulty in breathing begin to appear.

How to keep the child stress-free?

- Sleep affects the mood of any person. If the child does not sleep well, irritability and sadness appear in him. So the child should be given enough sleep.

- To reduce tension, the child should be encouraged to play some games or exercise. In the work that the body feels tired and does not get time to think about unnecessary things.

- If children see their parents in tension, then they also start getting tension. Therefore, parents should not sit anxiously in front of the child. Talk to them and play to make yourself and the child worry-free.

- If children are under tension, they don't even pay attention to their food. If tasty and nutritious food is prepared and served, it also plays an important role in reducing their tension.

- Children should be allowed to do things they are interested in. For example, listening to music, watching movies or playing games should be allowed. If they can do something they are interested in, their tension will be reduced. Making the atmosphere of the house better by laughing with them also reduces the tension.

- Instead of showing the weaknesses of the children, they should be praised for their good work. Even if you are encouraged that you can do better than this, the child's tension is reduced.
