A modified form of polio virus was found when a sample of sewage collected near the Tukucha-Bagamati confluence of Kathmandu was tested. After the detection of polio bacteria, a special vaccination campaign against polio is being conducted in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Why is polio vaccination important? How effective is the vaccine against polio? Dr. etc. Edited part of online journalist Sumitra Luitel's conversation with Gautam:

What disease is polio?

Polio is a disease caused by the virus. It spreads mainly through person-to-person contact. It is spread by consuming food or drinks containing feces and urine of an infected person. Polio mainly affects children under the age of five.

There are three types of polio virus, P1, P2, and P3, and polio can be caused by all three types of viruses. Polio is an infectious disease, which is called Ficorlut.

The polio virus first infects the intestines. As a result, flu-like symptoms appear. After this, the infection affects the brain and spinal cord. A person infected with the polio virus can become paralyzed and cannot recover from the paralysis. Death can also occur from this disease.

What are the symptoms of polio?

Its most recognizable symptom is paralysis. But before that, children usually have fever, diarrhea, joint pain, tiredness, and common cold after being infected with polio.

Are polio drops and polio vaccine two different things?

There are two types of polio vaccine available in Nepal. An OPV oral 'polio drop' is a vaccine against polio. Polio vaccine should be administered three times at 6, 10 and 14 weeks after birth through regular vaccination program. In addition to this, children under the age of five should be given two drops of polio in every polio vaccination campaign.

Another FIPV vaccine is given by injection between 6 and 14 weeks of age. This vaccine should be given twice in addition to the oral polio vaccine. FIPV provides more immunity to fight polio.

It is an additional amount of polio vaccine that is being given now. Children who have already been fully vaccinated should also be regularly vaccinated.

How effective is the polio vaccine?

Polio vaccine is very safe and effective so you can vaccinate your children with confidence.

Not only polio, other vaccines given in Nepal are safe and effective. The vaccine is recognized by the World Health Organization and is also recognized by the Department of Drug Administration. So you can wear it with confidence.

Who should not be vaccinated against polio?

Some children who are sick and hospitalized and have a high fever should not receive this vaccine immediately. Vaccination can be given after the fever is cured.

Children with cancer and children with AIDS infection cannot get this vaccine because their immunity is weak.

Which age group is at risk of polio?

All age groups are at risk of polio. But children under five years of age are at high risk. Children who have not received the polio vaccine or who have not received the full dose of polio vaccine are at high risk of the disease. If even one child in the community is infected with polio, there is a chance of transmission to other children.

What is the treatment and prevention of polio?

There is no cure for polio. No treatment is possible after paralysis. So it should be avoided. The best and most effective way to protect against this disease is the polio vaccine. To avoid this, children should be given the full dose of regular polio vaccine according to the national vaccination schedule.

If the vaccine dose is missed, the vaccine will not work properly and there is a risk of various infections. Therefore, complete vaccination must be applied. To avoid this, special attention should be paid to personal hygiene, clean water and clean food.
